Meet Professor Pascal Tyrrell

Pascal Tyrrell is an accomplished data scientist and academic leader, recognized for his transformative contributions to medical imaging, artificial intelligence (AI), and global health. As the Director of Data Science in the Department of Medical Imaging within the Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto, Pascal drives groundbreaking research at the intersection of AI and healthcare. His work focuses on leveraging machine learning for medical image analysis to improve diagnostic accuracy and patient outcomes.

Pascal holds also appointments as an associate professor in the Department of Statistical Sciences and the Institute of Medical Sciencee where he serves as the Director of Equity, Diversity, Indigeneity and Accessibility and Inclusion (EDIIA). In this capacity, he has championed systemic change, creating inclusive educational environments that integrate Indigenous and diverse global perspectives. His initiatives, such as the CAN-Tico Global Health Research partnership, have enhanced healthcare access in low- and middle-income countries, demonstrating his commitment to global equity.

A serial entrepreneur, Pascal has founded several ventures across computer software, medical devices, and agri-tech. He co-established the MiDATA data science program, offering education and consulting services to hundreds of trainees, faculty, and researchers in medical imaging. His innovation extends to pioneering AI tools like cost-effective cancer screening methods and point-of-care ultrasound systems that address healthcare disparities globally.

Pascal is a sought-after speaker and has led interdisciplinary courses in AI, entrepreneurship, and global health at institutions in Canada and abroad. His courses, including “AI in Medicine” and “Startups in the Medical Sciences,” foster collaboration across countries and disciplines, preparing the next generation of leaders in science and innovation.

Pascal’s leadership has attracted substantial support from competitive funding initiatives, enabling impactful research and education projects that address real-world challenges. His dedication to cross-cultural and interdisciplinary learning has earned multiple accolades, including recognition for advancing global education through his innovative teaching methods. As the founding director of the IMPACT-MED conference and a pivotal collaborator in establishing the Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence in Health (LIAS) in Costa Rica, Pascal continues to shape the future of medical education and research on a global scale.
