Nicolas Wojtarowicz (2025-2026) Nicolas is a third year undergraduate student at UofT doing a double major in math and physics with a minor in statistics. Over the summer, he participated in GoOpenDataAssociation’s GOODHack25, doing data analysis research that aims to manage some of the side effects of climate change. Winnie Ye (2025) Winnie is currently a second-year undergraduate student studying Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science at the University of Toronto. She is particularly interested in the intersection of data science and healthcare, with a focus on how machine learning techniques can be adapted to address small-sample challenges in medical imaging.

Beyond coursework, she participated in the Women in Data Science Kaggle Competition, where she applied Python-based machine learning techniques to analyze ADHD-related patterns. While the domain was different from medical imaging, the project helped her strengthen her skills in data preprocessing, independent learning, and adapting to unfamiliar tools—all of which are highly transferable to this project.

Winnie is also comfortable working with Python and R, and has experience using Jupyter environments with libraries such as matplotlib, plotly, and ipywidgets to create interactive visualizations. She has also recently been familiarizing herself with GitHub for version control and collaboration. She enjoys making data and computational processes more intuitive and accessible through visual tools, and looks forward to contributing to the team.

 

 

Dr. Jean Carlo SeguraJean Carlo Segura is a physician from the University of Costa Rica, Director of the Medical Integration Section at the School of Medicine. He is a professor in clinical simulation and a researcher in tropical diseases for the WHO. He is also responsible for projects with indigenous populations, medical devices, and health technologies.

Dr. Roberto Romero Roberto Romero is a Professor and Chair of Graduate Studies at the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, Universidad de las Américas-Puebla (Mexico). His pioneering work has helped bring internet services and other technology to isolated communities with diverse applications in education and health.

Dr. Anuja Mandavkar (Physician, India)Dr. Anuja Mandavkar is an International Medical Graduate from India, currently preparing for medical licensing exams in Canada. She is dedicated to continuous learning and aspire to contribute meaningfully to the medical field and patient care.

Dr. Aria Hassanpour (Dentist, Iran)Aria earned his DDS degree from Azad Medical University, Tehran, Iran, in 2023. His research focuses on the applications of AI in medical imaging, particularly in dentistry. In previous projects, he has developed deep learning models for analyzing panoramic and CBCT images. His current work explores the use of AI to enhance dental education for undergraduate students.

Dr. Pardaman Setia (Radiologist, India)Dr. Pardaman Singh is a radiologist and translational researcher passionate about advancing diagnostic imaging through artificial intelligence and cutting-edge imaging techniques. With international training in radiology, he is currently pursuing a Master of Health Science in Translational Research at the University of Toronto, focusing on integrating AI into imaging for improved patient outcomes and disease management. His research interests include cardiac imaging, neuroimaging, and AI-driven innovations in radiology, with a commitment to bridging the gap between scientific discoveries and clinical applications. She holds a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Calgary, with expertise in AI-driven medical image diagnosis and data analysis. Passionate about research, her work focuses on learning algorithms, computer vision, imaging, and representation learning to address real-world challenges.

Dmitrii Paniukov (2020-2021) Dimitrii has a Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology. During his time with the lab, he has been working on creating an AI-driven solution to guide and educate ultrasound users on how to perform the scan. Currently, Dmitrii works as an entrepreneur applying his expertise in cognition and AI in educational projects.

Majid Jaberipour (2021-2022) Majid is currently a Post-Doctoral Fellow under the supervision of Dr. Pascal Tyrrell at the department of Medical imaging, Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto. He is currently working on Deep learning approaches for ultrasound guidance navigation. His main focus is in designing novel methodologies in Deep learning with a focus on medical imaging and computer vision. He also is a guest lecturer in the AI in Medicine course at University of Toronto. Before joining University of Toronto, he has been a Post-Doctoral Fellow at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and UBC. His goal is to design practical computational AI algorithms to improve the quality of human life. He was asked to give talks in different universities in Canada. His work has received over 500 citations.

James Hong (PhD, Postdoc with Dr. Fehlings, Guest Lecturer) Dr. James Hong is a post-doctoral fellow at the Fehlings laboratory at the Krembil Research Institute, Toronto Western Hospital. His doctoral thesis focused on the transcriptomic profiling of traumatic spinal cord injury. He is the author of 21 peer-reviewed articles in the field, and currently works on the development of cellular and non-invasive therapies for degenerative cervical myelopathy and traumatic cervical spinal cord injury. He has a strong interest in applied AI and machine learning in the context of transcriptomic analysis and is passionate about higher education. He currently works with Dr. Tyrrell on the delivery of the AI in medicine course and machine learning module at the University of Toronto.

Diana EscobozaDiana graduated in 2022 with a BASc in engineering. For the ESC499 undergraduate thesis course, she worked on a project that consisted of training an algorithm to identify/detect the anatomical landmarks on ultrasounds for the elbow, knee, and ankle joints.

Hanzi Jiang Hanzi Jiang is a fourth-year student studying Computer Science (AI focus) and Statistics. She is interested in the intersection of ML and medical imaging, and would like to put all of the things she has learned at school into practice.

Amar Dholakia Amar has spent 2 years at the Tyrrell Lab, one as a work-study student, and another as an independent research student. As a work-study student, he helped maintain, update, and query the Faculty of Medical Imaging’s personnel database. His research investigated the viability of using clustering methods to assess the effects of dataset heterogeneity on convolutional neural network performance. Amar will be starting his MSc in Biostatistics at UofT in the Fall of 2020.
